At its conception, the Bf 109 was a very promising asset despite some powerplant troubles. These were solved by the introduction of the DB601. The E-3 was the sister version to the E-1 developed from the prototype Bf 109V15. The 'Emil' was the first version where the DB 601 replaced the Jumo 210.
